Tell us your story
Why do you support greater choice at the end of life?

If you have a personal reason for supporting Dignity in Dying and would be willing to have your story on our website or speak to the media, we would like to hear from you.

When end of life issues are raised in the media, we are inundated with requests for Dignity in Dying supporters to share their personal stories with local and national media. These requests range from local radio to national broadcast and everything in between.  We currently have a small but committed group of spokespeople on different areas of our work - some prefer to remain anonymous, other choose to do interviews for newspapers but not broadcast, it really is up to the individual what they want to commit to.

We provide training and ongoing support for our media spokespeople and you are of course free to say no to requests as and when they come in.

You may not think you have a relevant story to tell but most people become involved in the campaign for choice at the end of life because of a personal experience, and it is these stories which really resonate with the media and members of the public.

We are particularly interested to hear from people who:

  • have witnessed a loved one having a good death because of their advance decision (living will).
  • have witnessed a loved one having a bad death, which perhaps made them consider making an advance decision for themselves.
  • are terminally ill and want the choice of an assisted death for themselves.
  • have helped a loved one to fulfil their wish for help to die, (eg accompanying a loved one to Dignitas).
  • consider themselves to have a disability and support choice at the end of life.
  • consider themselves to have a faith and support choice at the end of life.
  • have experience in a health care setting and have seen firsthand why choice at the end of life is important.

Along with anyone else who feels able to share their reasons for supporting choice and control at the end of life.

These stories are not always easy to tell, and I can assure you that contacting us regarding your personal experiences does not commit you to doing anything further.

Should you like to share your story, please email us with a short summary, no more than 500 words, and let me know if you are happy for your story to go on our website.  Examples of existing stories can be viewed in the personal stories section of our website. If that is as much as you want to do then that's absolutely fine but if you would also be prepared to speak to the media about your story, with support from us, then please indicate what you are prepared to do i.e newspapers, magazines, radio, TV.
