Read Personal Stories

Steve Barksby

Have you seen a friend or a member of your family die the kind of death you wouldn't yourself want? Because I have.

I have seen many of my friends die from AIDS. Some have endured loss of appetite, fatigue, forced feeding, suffocation, dementia, pipes and tubes in and out of every orifice, needing 24-hour care.

I have thought about this long and hard and have made the decision that if my health deteriorates and I feel I no longer have the quality of life I need, I want to be able to say goodbye properly to my friends and relatives and have the death of my choice.

I have been living with an AIDS diagnosis for 7 years now. I do not want to be made to suffer the indignities I have seen my friends endure.
