Response to Ministry of Justice - Breaking the Cycle: Effective punishment, rehabilitation and sentencing of prisoners.

Response in March 2011 arguing that a separate offence or partial defense of "mercy killing" should be created. This would allow the law to take motivation (specifically compassion) into account in murder cases.

Response to the End of Life Assistance (Scotland) Bill


Dignity in Dying responded to the End of Life Assistance (Scotland) Bill consultation in May 2010. The Bill, introduced by Margo MacDonald MSP, was defeated by a vote in the Scottish Parliament in November 2010. 

In May 2012 Dignity in Dying responded to the Assisted Suicide (Scotland) Bill consultation. The Bill is the second to be introduced by Margo MacDonald MSP.

Response to the DPP's consultation on assisted suicide

The Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) was instructed by the Law Lords, in their judgement on the Debbie Purdy case (in July 2009), to issue a prosecuting policy on assisted suicide. The DPP issued an interim policy in September 2009, and held a public consultation on the policy. Dignity in Dying's reponse.

The DPP published his final policy in February 2010.

Response to the Ministry of Justice consultation on murder, manslaughter and infanticide

We responded to this consultation in October 2008, and called for a review of murder law in relation to mercy killing.

Palliative Care (Scotland) Bill

Dignity in Dying responded to the Palliative Care (Scotland) Bill in August 2010.
