Dignity in Dying
your life, your choice
Support Our Work to Promote Better Choice for Patients at the End of Life
Every year we are contacted by hundreds of adults who have been diagnosed with a terminal or chronic illness. Many fear that their wishes for a dignified end of life will not be respected under the current law, like Diane Pretty who in 2002 saw her legal battle for the right to die with dignity at a time of her choosing all the way to the European Court of Human Rights.
Since then Dignity in Dying has been working with leading parliamentarians on the Assisted Dying for the Terminally Ill Bill. We have also been working with individual campaigners such as Debbie Purdy to clarify the law regarding freedom of choice at the end of life, and in the last six months alone we have produced the Know Your Rights Guide and A Charter for Dignity at the End of Life.
A recent survey has found that choice over healthcare at the end of life is more highly valued than choice when giving birth. Yet the picture from hospitals suggests that there is a gap between patients?expectations and the reality of services available.
Dignity in Dying is the only organisation campaigning for your rights at the end of life.
"I have been diagnosed with Primary Progressive Multiple Sclerosis. I am an optimist and enjoy my life to the full, but I want to know that if my quality of life deteriorates to the point where my life becomes unbearable on a consistent and lasting basis, I could receive help to relieve my suffering. I do not want to have to commit suicide before I become physically unable to end my life ?and before I am ready to die. The law is forcing me to contemplate a terrifying choice, and I will do that I can to change it."
