Withholding and withdrawing treatment
Withholding & withdrawing treatment

Doctors can withhold or withdraw medical treatment in certain circumstances, even if this results in your death. Doctors make the decision to withhold or withdraw treatment when they believe treatment may not be effective and that it is not in your best interests.

Decisions to withhold or withdraw treatment are made when the patient cannot communicate their wishes. That is one of the reasons why it is important to consider making an Advance Decision. If you do not do this, it will be the doctor who makes the decision whether or not to withdraw treatment. Your relatives do not have the right to make these decisions, although it is best practice for the doctor to consult with your relatives over treatment decisions.

Read the guidelines which health care professionals should follow.
