Professor Robert Hazell

Robert has had four careers: as a barrister; a senior civil servant in the Home Office; Director of the Nuffield Foundation; and since 1995, founder and director of the Constitution Unit at University College London, a think tank specialising in constitutional reform. In 2015 he took semi-retirement, continuing as Professor of Government and the Constitution at UCL, but having more time for other causes.

He brings to the Board his knowledge of Westminster and Whitehall, having been closely involved in constitutional reform (for which he received a CBE in 2006), and changes in the law. His interest goes beyond seeking a change in the law, to ensuring broader choices for people who are dying, supported by sound research. He has led many research projects leading to changes in policy and practice, and is a regular contributor to the media.
