New polling shows majority support for assisted dying in every single Senedd constituency as Dignity in Dying launches election campaign
New MRP polling commissioned by Dignity in Dying and conducted by Opinium across all 16 Senedd constituencies shows overwhelming and consistent public support for the legalisation of assisted dying in Wales with a clear majority backing change in every single constituency, from Clwyd to Carmarthenshire. Opinium conducted a nationally representative study of 4,000 adults aged 18+ in Wales between 23 December 2025 and 19 January 2026.
The polling, which has not previously been published, finds that support for legalising assisted dying as a choice for terminally ill adults averages at 72% across Wales’s 16 Senedd constituencies, compared with an average of just 19% who oppose it. In the constituency with the lowest support, Clwyd, nearly two thirds (66%) of voters still back a change in the law. In Brecon, Tawe (Swansea Valley) & Neath, support rises to 77%. This is not a marginal or contested issue: across every corner of Wales, voters want their elected representatives to act.
The polling also reveals strong public opposition to Wales being left behind should the Terminally Ill Adults (End of Life) Bill currently progressing through the House of Lords become law in England. When asked whether they would want assisted dying to be a legal option in Wales if it becomes available in England, support averages 76% across all 16 constituencies. In no constituency does support for alignment with England fall below 70%.
The findings are published today as Dignity in Dying launches its campaign for the 2026 Senedd Elections, calling on all candidates to publicly back assisted dying legislation and commit to keeping the issue on the Senedd’s agenda in the new term. The campaign launch is accompanied by an open letter* to Senedd candidates signed by terminally ill people and bereaved families from across Wales, including Noah Herniman who is 19 and living with an inoperable brain tumour, Clare Williams who witnessed her father suffer immensely from bowel cancer, and Fran Jackson who is living with cancer. They are urging candidates to pledge their support, engage with the issue publicly before polling day, and meet directly with those affected.
Earlier this year, the Senedd passed a Legislative Consent Motion in support of the Terminally Ill Adults (End of Life) Bill, a significant moment of leadership that campaigners say must be built upon in the new Senedd. The Terminally Ill Adults (End of Life) Bill passed the House of Commons in two free votes last year but has since been the subject of intense filibuster by a small number of peers in the House of Lords. High public expectation remains for the Bill to return imminently in the next parliamentary session to ensure a democratic conclusion.
Sarah Wootton, Chief Executive of Dignity in Dying, said:
“Welsh voters have spoken. In every single Senedd constituency, rural and urban Wales alike, a clear majority of voters want to be able to choose the option of an assisted death. These are not statistics on a spreadsheet; they are the voices of constituents who want this issue addressed by the people they elect.
“The Senedd showed real leadership earlier this year in passing the Legislative Consent Motion, and as we head into these elections, we are asking candidates to honour that. Terminally ill people in Wales are dying without choice, right now, in every constituency this polling covers. Candidates have an opportunity and, we believe, a responsibility to stand with them.”
The open letter, addressed directly to candidates standing in all constituencies, calls for three commitments: to pledge support for assisted dying legislation and make that position publicly known before polling day; if elected, to keep assisted dying on the Senedd’s agenda; and to meet with terminally ill people and bereaved families in their constituencies.
